BREWERIES

Better when you get it from the source

San Diego, CA

With the help of Chris’s cousin, Master Brewer Karl M. Strauss, it was on February 2, 1989 that Karl Strauss Brewing Company officially opened its doors in downtown San Diego and kicked off the city’s craft beer industry. Happily, as Karl Strauss Brewing Company grew, so did the industry as a whole.
These days, the company continues to pioneer the independent brewing scene by crafting innovative beers across a wide range of styles, and in 2017, they brewed more than 140 different beers. Brands like Aurora Hoppyalis IPA, Queen of Tarts Dark Sour, and Wreck Alley Imperial Stout have helped launch the brewery into a new era; while beers such as Red Trolley Ale—one of the most award-winning beers in the world—stand as a testament to Karl’s rich brewing legacy.
Since 2009, Karl Strauss has won over 110 medals and counting, and at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival they received the prestigious honor of being named Mid-Size Brewing Company and Mid-Size Brewer of the Year. Nearly three decades after opening their doors, Karl Strauss Brewing Company is proud of their past and look eagerly to their future. Cheers!

Founded by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner, Stone Brewing has come a long way since opening up in San Diego, California in 1996. We have been listed on the Inc. 500 | 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies list 11 times, and has been called the “All-time Top Brewery on Planet Earth” by BeerAdvocate magazine twice. Stone Brewing is the eighth-largest craft brewer in the U.S. and with our breweries in Richmond, Virginia & Berlin, Germany, we join artisanal brewers across the world in the quest to show the public that there are more…and better…choices beyond the world of industrial beer.

We proudly specialize in locally grown, small-farm ingredients and feature an eclectic menu of world-inspired cuisine and our unique take on comfort food. As strong advocates for environmental responsibility and high-quality food, we are now the largest restaurant purchaser of local, small-farm organic produce in San Diego County.

San Marcos, CA

Today Port Brewing continues at the vanguard of craft brewing, ranked as one of the top 10 new breweries in the nation by both industry experts and enthusiasts alike, driven in large part by its extraordinary Lost Abbey beers and a library of 1000+ plus oak bourbon, brandy, sherry, and wine barrels that comprise one of the most remarkable barrel-aging programs for a craft brewery of any size. Distribution has also expanded to major cities and metropolitan areas throughout the country, allowing beer lovers to now enjoy fresh brewed Port products from coast to coast.
We ask you to join us on our mission to make locally brewed beers in the most imaginative and flavorful ways possible. While we are in the business of making beer, we also believe that we are foremost in the business of imagining all things possible and our goal as brewers and imaginers is to cultivate and develop the fruits of our fertile imaginations.

San Diego, CA

From humble San Diego beginnings came true enlightenment for this leading craft brewery. Mike and Lisa Hinkley established Green Flash in 2002. Today, our talented team of like-minded craft beer enthusiasts embrace the Green Flash culture and brand vision with passion and zeal. Green Flash operates a full-scale brewery and tasting room in San Diego, and a Brewhouse and Eatery outpost in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Part legend, part luck, the elusive green flash is a San Diego sensation. But to us, it’s more than a burst of brilliant green light as the sun sets into the sea – it’s a magical moment that signals the end of an extraordinary day and the start of an epic night on the horizon.

San Diego, CA

We started out in 1996 as a small group of San Diego home brewers who simply wanted to make a better beer. In our exploration, we became obsessed with ingredients—tinkering, testing and tasting to find the perfect balance of taste and aroma. That adventurous spirit leads to award-winning beers in classic and unique styles while challenging our own tastes and expanding yours.
We’re proud of our San Diego hometown, our employees, our beers, and our fans. We think of our employees as family, and you, our fans, as extended family. You’ll see us use #BPPROUD as a badge of pride and a way to further connect with our beer loving community.

The Bruery is a boutique craft brewery located in Orange County, CA specializing in barrel aged and experimental ales. Founded as a small, friend & family run business in 2008, The Bruery takes its unique moniker from founder Patrick Rue’s family surname.
The Bruery is founded on the excitement that Patrick felt in those first years of homebrewing and we continue to strive for that same passion in every aspect of our business today. We never stop challenging ourselves to develop distinctive & imaginative beers, constantly pursuing improvement in all that we do. We brew dozens of original beers each year with our list of ingredients and inspirations growing perpetually. Our collection of oak barrels has also become a primary element of our brewery. Nearly half of our beer is aged in wine or spirit barrels bringing forth flavors reminiscent of the Belgian countryside or classic American distillers.
We greatly value our customers as well as our employees at The Bruery and want to give them all an impassioned way to spend their time while sharing a beer worth talking about.

Long Beach, CA

Based on the ten kegs we go through a week, we like to think we can convert anyone. But don't be surprised if you come in and don't see the beer you drank yesterday. When it's gone, dunzo. Adiós!

Temecula, CA

As one of Temecula’s first craft breweries, Black Market introduced locally brewed beers to the community. Now found far beyond Temecula, Black Market beers are on shelves and in establishments throughout Southern California, Arizona and Washington.
Like many craft breweries before us, we have followed stories of those who came before us. We’re proud to have launched the movement in Temecula, to keep inspiring the next waves of great beer with our success, and to continue to lead through our quality process, experimental hop releases, and innovative beers.

Fullerton, CA

Since opening in 2008, Bootlegger’s Brewery has continued to evolve and grow. Eventually outgrowing the original facility off Richman Ave. Bootlegger’s then moved into a much larger production facility in 2012 and opened a new tasting room in Downtown Fullerton in 2013. In 2017 they expanded to a new pilot brewery and tasting room in Redlands, California with another pilot brewery and tasting room slated to open late 2017 in Costa Mesa, California.
Over the years, we’ve grown from a one-person operation to over 35 employees. We’ve also expanded our equipment by installing a new 30-barrel brewhouse in the summer of 2015.

Redlands, CA

Hangar 24 began its craft brewing exploration with a true passion for good beer, the absolute love of flying and the pure enjoyment of being around great friends. My buddies and I used to meet at hangar No. 24 at the Redlands Municipal Airport, after an afternoon of flying, to trade stories, talk aviation, play music and share a few cold ones that were recently home brewed. These days, the location of where the beers are brewed has changed, but the quality time spent enjoying a delicious, handcrafted beer and conversation with friends is the same as ever. I personally want to invite you to join the adventure. Cheers!

NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

Badwater_Basin_2.jpg

Death Valley, CA

The salt flats in Badwater Basin cover nearly 200 square miles, among the largest protected salt flats in the world.

Salt flats are too harsh for most plants and animals to survive, yet are quite fragile. Delicate crystals are easily crushed and the relatively thin upper crust of salt can break through to the mud layer below, leaving tire tracks and even footprints. For this reason, vehicles are prohibited off established roads in Death Valley.

The lava tube formed when molten basaltic lava coursed across the landscape, oozing outward and spreading like melting butter. Though the top hardened as it cooled, lava continued moving beneath, carving tunnels as it churned along. Eventually, after the volcanic eruption ceased, the lava flowed out the end of the tunnel and left a hollow tube in its wake.
The Mojave National Preserve has an expansive history of volcanic activity. It’s been about 7.6 million years since the first cinder cones burst upward from the Earth’s crust, and the lava didn’t stop flowing until only 10,000 years ago.

The Bear Gulch Cave provides a home to a colony of Townsend's big-eared bats as they rest there in winter and raise their young in the late spring and summer. Townsend's big-eared bats are listed as a "sensitive species" by the state of California, and we are required to protect them. The colony in the Bear Gulch Cave is the largest maternity colony between San Francisco and Mexico.
The lower half of the Bear Gulch Cave is usually open from mid-July through mid-May each year, depending on the presence of the colony of bats. The entire cave is closed from mid-May to mid-July while the bats are raising their young

Morro Bay, CA

Morro Rock, a State Historic Landmark, was formed about 23 million years ago from the plugs of long-extinct volcanoes. Morro Rock was an important navigational aid for mariners for over 300 because the rock is approximately 576 feet tall which made it the most visible in a chain of 9 peaks. Portuguese explorer, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo named the rock "El Morro" in 1542. In Spanish "Morro" means crown shaped hill. Morro Rock, sometimes called the "Gibraltar of the Pacific," is the last peak of the Nine Sisters, which extend from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay.

Pfeiffer Beach in the Big Sur area is definitely off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. Just south of Big Sur Station on Highway 1 is unsigned Sycamore Canyon Road which winds its way down to the shore. The two-mile long road is paved, but it is twisty and narrow so RV’s and trailers are not allowed (look for the yellow “Narrow Road” sign at the turn-off). From the parking area you have a short walk down to the beach. At this location Sycamore Canyon Creek empties into the Pacific and a rocky point protects some of the sand at the cove. Waves crash hard all around and the beach north of here invites exploration at lower tides. Tide pools can be found here at low tide too. The focal point of the beach is Keyhole Rock which has an amazing natural arch at the base where salt water, and even the last rays of daylight, can pass through. This beach is beautiful at sunset and frequently professionally photographed. The north end of the beach has unique purple sand that comes from manganese garnet rocks in the cliffs, just be aware that sometimes clothing-optional folks have been spotted in this area. Pfeiffer Beach is on land within Los Padres National Forest, but is managed with help from the California Coastal Commission.

racetrack.jpg

Death Valley, CA

To see the moving rocks, drive two miles south of the Grandstand parking area. Walk at least a half mile toward the southeast corner of the playa for the best views of rocks and their tracks on the playa. Erosional forces cause rocks from the surrounding mountains to tumble to the surface of the Racetrack. Once on the floor of the playa the rocks move across the level surface leaving trails as records of their movements. Some of the moving rocks are large and have traveled as far as 1,500 feet. Throughout the years many theories have been suggested to explain the mystery of these rock movements. A research project has suggested that a rare combination of rain and wind conditions enable the rocks to move. A rain of about 1/2 inch, will wet the surface of the playa, providing a firm but extremely slippery surface. Strong winds of 50 mph or more, may skid the large boulders along the slick mud.

Hearst Castle’s history begins in 1865, when George Hearst purchased 40,000 acres of ranchland. After his mother’s death in 1919, William Randolph Hearst inherited thousands of acres around San Simeon, and over time, he purchased more. The spread eventually encompassed about 250,000 acres. With architect Julia Morgan, Hearst conceived a retreat he called La Cuesta Encantada—Spanish for “Enchanted Hill.” By 1947, when Hearst had to leave the remote location because of his fragile health, the estate was still unfinished even though it comprised 165 rooms and 123 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways—all built to Hearst’s specifications and showcasing a legendary art collection.
